Dear Prospective Student,

BHAVANA Studio started as the sister company ‘House of Yoga’ Summer 2019, in Cambridge, MA. I was curious of ways instructors and avid practitioners could teach in urban areas without association to a physical studio. I began tinkering with the app building of an user interface using the concept ‘to serve independent wellness instructors by connecting them with un-used urban spaces for yoga and meditation classes.’ I felt instructor opportunities have become homogeneous, and individuals should have autonomy over their teaching preferences. Through HOY, instructors did not have to be associated with a physical studio or location to form their yoga brand and maintain a community of students. HOY would have a selection of wellness classes in a variety of unique spaces (i.e. empty churches, art studios, living rooms, corporate buildings after hours). Yoga integrated into the modern world. No studio necessary.

In March 2020, at the start of the global pandemic, the short term solution for our early-concept business was to offer online classes. I contacted instructors that I originally researched for HOY and asked if they would agree to step into the virtual world for LIVE lessons. Late March 2020 became the official launch date of our company. Today BHAVANA has become an art gallery, a standard for yoga instruction, a collaboration effort among creatives, and a resource for those serious about learning the craft of yoga.

Yoga is an art, a way to fine tune and authenticate what’s true to you. A regular yoga practice has the ability to reset and change your entire outlook on life. Yoga can be medicine and emotional support. It can also put oil on the hardwired beliefs and difficulties you may have. Overtime, as you develop a relationship with yoga, you will examine your body so closely, it may feel like there is only breathe and conscious. To start practice, it takes putting aside time to see the value of your body and life. You as an individual are the most important center piece and investment of your life. Value yourself and your health. Take time everyday to create a personal vision and tend to the fluctuations of body and mind. You will see your life transform if you commit to a daily practice. There are no limitations to the body and mind, and yoga gives you the tools and opportunity.

As you explore and see profiles of the teachers on our page, I encourage you to try the different threads of yoga for the individual to find their own path towards liberation; in past, my own practices include Iyengar, Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Vinyasa and Hatha. If you’re new to yoga and need a starting point, I suggest picking up these two books - they were a good resource for me years ago and still today:

Light on Life
Light on Yoga
both by B. K. S. Iyengar

Lastly, thank you to Sarah Trelease and Renee Stills, co-owners of Sola School of Contemplative Arts, for setting the tone of what it means to be a modern women in wellness and being my first true teachers in yoga. 10 years and counting of this practice.
